Garrison Keillor Hospitalized with Minor Stroke
Humorist and Lake Wobegon resident Garrison Keillor, 67, was hospitalized Sunday evening at Mayo Clinic’s St. Mary’s Hospital after suffering a mild stroke. Keillor, of course, announced the news in his usual style sending out a Facebook notice which read: “Garrison Keillor has landed in the hospital, one more pitiful giant with tubes in his hands, wearing a tiny hospital gown, peeing into a container, and endlessly reciting his correct name and date of birth. Have Mercy.” A hospital spokesman says he is doing well, and expects to be released from the hospital on Friday, and return to a normal work schedule next week.
Every minute counts when it comes to recovering from a stroke. As the US Department of Health and Human Services says in its PSA’s:
“If you have a stroke, you have 60 minutes to win or lose the race of your life. With every second, a stroke can kill a part of your brain that may control movement, sight, or speech.
Now there are new treatments. But you must get to a hospital fast.
If you suddenly feel numbness on one side, have trouble talking, walking, or seeing, it could be a stroke.
Call 9-1-1. If you have a stroke, how you spend the next 60 minutes could determine how you spend the rest of your life.”
Signs of a stroke:
- Sudden NUMBNESS or weakness of face, arm, or leg, especially on one side of the body
- Sudden CONFUSION, trouble speaking or understanding speech
- Sudden TROUBLE SEEING in one or both eyes
- Sudden TROUBLE WALKING, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination
- Sudden SEVERE HEADACHE with no known cause
