Every year, 44 million Americans suffer from a mood disorder, the most common of which are major depression and bipolar (manic) depression. This is our second account of a professional athlete (the first was Suzy Hamilton) whose life and career has been upset by major depression.

The U.S. National Institute of Mental Health has some real stories of men and depression and also a short video on the signs, symptoms and treatment of depression.

Doctors diagnose mental disorders using rules spelled out in a book called DSM-IV (the fourth edition of the Diagnostic Manual of Mental Disorders published by the American Psychiatric Association). Two of the best books describing what it really feels like to be clinically depressed are The Noonday Demon and Unholy Ghost.
