Steve Jobs was very lucky to get a liver transplant. Over half of the 102,000 Americans on the national waiting list will die before they get a transplant. Most of these deaths are needless. Americans bury or cremate about 20,000 transplantable organs every year. Over 6,000 of their neighbors die every year as a result.

There is a simple way to put a big dent in the organ shortage -- give organs first to people who have agreed to donate their own organs when they die.

Giving organs first to organ donors will convince more people to register as organ donors. It will also make the organ allocation system fairer. People who aren't prepared to share the gift of life should go to the back of the transplant waiting list as long as there is a shortage of organs.

Anyone who wants to donate their organs to others who have agreed to donate theirs can join LifeSharers. LifeSharers is a non-profit network of organ donors who agree to offer their organs first to other organ donors when they die. Membership is free at www.lifesharers.org or by calling 1-888-ORGAN88. There is no age limit, parents can enroll their minor children, and no one is excluded due to any pre-existing medical condition.

I am in awe of this beautiful woman, with a voice of an Angel! God most definitely knew what He was doing! Blessed her thru her ordeal with Cancer, created a most stunning human being, and to boot, gave her an amazing singing talent!!!!!!!!!! Could not be more PERFECT!!!!!!! She has to be the WINNER of America's Got Talent, because NO ONE ELSE EVEN COMES CLOSE!!!!!!!

CM, I feel for you. What a devastating illness in one so young. And you sound so intelligent and so calm.

Please call your local Medicaid office or department of Human Services or Disability services or what ever. Check the front of your phone book. Tell them you need a social worker to help you with these applications. They CAN help and maybe have more services to help share your load.

Medicaid and Medicare can be wonderful and have more ways to help than you can imagine. A friend just called for a little help; she and her sister were caving in under the load of care for her mother with dementia at home. They found they were eligible for more help than they dreamed of, both financial and in services. It has quite lightened their load.

I hope you can get help with these burdens. No one should have to go it alone. That's why we have these great programs. And that's why many of us are working for the Health Care Bill, so that there will be no one without insurance and so that improvements will be made within the system. The bill includes mandates for research, and funds to increase education for nurses and primary care doctors. Oh, yes, for simplification of paperwork and ease of transferring medical records. So we are all lobbying for you.

Please keep telling your story on line and help educate people to the needs of so many. And fight on.

I suffer from recurrent malignant brain tumor, but am lucky in terms of its location (frontal lobe tumors are easy to reach surgically) and its pathology (my tumor type is far less virulent than Kennedy's GBM.) I went through a potentially-lethal experimental protocol in 1999, which led to an 8-year remission, but cancer returned in 2007, and though I finished radiation a mere 18 months ago, it's back again now. While primary brain tumors metastasize only in rare occurrences, they do tend to come back. Kennedy is surely the highest profile brain tumor diagnosis we've had - and brain cancer people need that, we don't have the great numbers of the breast cancer and prostate cancer people. We don't have a bracelet or a ribbon or too many walk-a-thons, but we're out there among you every day. Weren't the 90s named the Decade of the Brain? Well, I was in the thick of it all back then, but there weren't too many advanced options. For the rest of my life I will be monitoring my tumor site in an attempt to avoid further surgeries. I know there are people who are far worse off than I - but I am a brain tumor patient who is also uninsured. And the paperwork in obtaining Medicaid or Medicare (I'm 45) isn't really what I want to be thinking about as I realize my days of long remissions might be over. Some sense of security would be wonderful. I haven't had that since I was required to write my first will and living will at the age of 29. Who will lobby Washington for brain cancer patients now that Kennedy is gone?

I have been a jonas brothers fan since their first single "mandy." I love them with all my heart and what I saw today on Youtube BROUGHT ME TO TEARS! I never cried so hard in my life. Its this video called Pray For Jonas. I watched it because I thought they were going to be nice to the Jonas Brothers, but it was the complete opposite. They beat up this poor young man who had a jonas brothers poster and then they made him BURN IT! It was so sad. Please we have to stop this, we have to make youtube take it down. THIS IS HORRIBLE! I've noticed for both my husband and myself that we proportionally gain weight with the number of hours that we log in at work, because it takes away from the time we have to care for ourselves. My husband currently leaves for work at 5:30 am in the morning, arrives home at 8:00 pm at night, has work meetings scheduled straight through lunch, and puts in time on the weekends. He's the heaviest he's ever been.

Americans will get healthier when they get real about their working conditions. That means getting enough sleep, eating three healthy meals a day, and making time for exercise. Some of us are workaholics by choice, but more and more often, we are workaholics because that's what business requires.

I'm all for employers offering health promotion tools, especially for salaried employees who really don't have a lot of control over the number of hours they are required to work.
